Trend in Real Life: Oversized Coats

Oh, trends. Wonderful, hateful trends. When the trend is for pin-straight hair and yours is curly. Or the bob comes back and you’ve just finished growing yours out. Or, you know, any kind of clothing that looks good on models and model types, but on real people, it’s a bit questionable.

The big trend for Fall 2013 seems to be oversized coats. They were everywhere on the runway. The most fashionable of fashion bloggers are throwing them into every look.

I have to say, I LOVE the look of them (despite also thinking they look like the coat-length equivalent of an 80s blazer). I mean, they come in all sizes and with different details.

Wishlist Wednesday #7

Okay, now. I’ve covered boots, jewelry, dresses, hats, makeup, and shoes. It’s time for purses!! (You know, all the basic food groups!)

I discovered the bags of French brand Tammy & Benjamin through a boutique that I adore in Paris. Shortly after that, I saw Valentine rocking one of their bags. (In fact, I found out about her blog when the company referred to that entry, and I’m glad I did!)

Lucky for me, they deliver to the US, with no problems at all. (As does Shop des Créateurs.) I just adore their vintage feel, combined with the amazing French craftsmanship. I currently own the Elizabeth in gold, the Petit Charlie in blue, and the Emma in black. But what I really want now is this:

TammyAndBenjamin_03_resize Just freaking look at it!!

Considering my current unemployed state and lack of fundage, the good news is, I can’t find this version of the Petit Charlie anywhere. The bad news is, I CAN’T FIND THIS VERSION OF THE PETIT CHARLIE ANYWHERE. It’s in their lookbook for the new collection, but it’s not on their site. Or Shop des Créateurs. I tweeted the company, but they did not respond.

IT HURTS MY SOUL THAT THIS BAG CANNOT BE MINE.

But, if I have to settle for a replacement, the yellow and black Petit Charlie is pretty spiffy, too. Still. *sniff*

How many purses are too many purses? And isn’t “sac à main” such a great term? What are you lusting after this week?

The girl with a curl – How I style my curly hair

Hey guys! Today I figured that since I’ve already covered my basic skincare and beauty regimens, I’d talk about how I style my curly hair. (I even made a video! And it’s not about my Birchbox!)

It took me years to learn the optimum way of styling my curly hair. Part of that was finally finding a stylist who knew how to cut curly hair. I CANNOT STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT PART. Find someone you like who knows how to cut curly hair. I can’t tell you the number of times I came home from getting a hair cut in tears. My mother started to dread my haircuts!

There are so many more resources out there for people with curly hair than there were when I first permed my hair and went crying to my aunt who had years of perm experience. (As this would suggest, I always wanted curly hair. I think I had my first perm at 13. And then 1 or 2 more perms, and puberty hit, and voila! Forevermore curly!) But there are entire web sites to curly hair tips and products, such as CurlMart and NaturallyCurly.

I know I’m opening myself up to criticism, but I do NOT follow the Curly Girl Method, which prescribes no shampoo/sulfate-free shampoo only, no silicone products, and no heat drying. Among some other rules. They’re all set down in the book, Curly Girl: The NEW Handbook by Lorraine Massey (founder of Devachan Salon and the DevaCurl line) and Michelle Bender. It works for many people, but I’ve chosen another route.

Mostly because my stylist showed me the way that I use now to style my hair, finger curling, and it just works for my hair. But you decide what works best for you!

Celebrity Fashion Lust #3

Because DIOR HAUTE COUTURE.

Natalie-Portman-in-Christian-Dior-Couture-Thor-The-Dark-World-Paris-Premiere--600x900 Also, because how gorgeous is Natalie Portman?! I kind of forgive her for her ridiculous Oscars speech right now.

Obviously wearing Dior Haute Couture is something that will never ever ever ever ever happen to me in my life, but a girl can look and appreciate, right?!

What celebrity or even real-life looks have you been lusting after lately?

Music Monday #6

You know a song is good when you run out of the shower to grab your phone so you can Shazam it from the radio. That’s what happened to me when “Pompeii” by Bastille came on the radio while I was in Paris this summer. Water dripping everywhere, I dashed from the shower to my bedroom and back, because I couldn’t live with the idea that I would never know what song it was.

It’s ironic I had to learn about a British band while I was in France, especially since most of the bands I listen to are British. But I guess I’ve been slipping as of late. Because when I came home and looked them up, it turns out they had a show scheduled in New York already, and it was sold out! (See? I’m not a hipster!!) Ah, well.

Their album, Bad Blood, is now out in the US (it came out in the UK in March), and you should check it out. In the meantime, now you know what the song is, so you can stay in the shower (or dry, whichever you prefer 😉 )!

(Check out this awesome version in Gaelic, too!)

What do you think? Was it worth the effort I went through? 🙂 What are you listening to right now?

Une mini virée en voiture d’octobre 2013—Part I

Salut tout le monde! Hi everyone! To prevent you from photo overload, I’m going to split my road trip recap into 2. Today, we start at the beginning.

The great paradox of being unemployed is that you finally have time to travel to your heart’s content, but you no longer have the money. But when Rose suggested we take advantage of a deal for a night’s stay on Shelter Island, I jumped at the chance to get off my couch and get in a car. (I didn’t even know where it was; I didn’t actually care.) Road trips are about the only kind of travel I can afford right now, and it’s such a beautiful time of year to be traveling, with all the fall foliage.

We got a little bit later of a start than we had planned, but we lucked out with the traffic. She picked me up in Brooklyn and we headed out to Long Island. Of course, us being us, there was going to be some kind of detour. That day’s was for a bathroom stop at an outlet mall, where we saw they had one of the cosmetics outlet stores. Of course we had to stop. Rose got the burgundy lipstick she had been craving for fall, so it worked out pretty well.

Back on the road, we were headed for the city of Greenport, where we would get the ferry over to Shelter Island. We only had one time constraint: We had to find a place to watch the Real Madrid match by the latest 2:45. We beat that time by a great deal, getting to Greenport before 1 pm. Good thing, since this gave us time to walk around the tiny, quaint, seaside town. It was a grey, overcast, drizzly day, but it was still an adventure.

The search for the perfect red continues

I know I promised photos and the tale of my mini road trip to Shelter Island, but I’m just too tired. I saw Frightened Rabbit last night, for the conclusion of Scotland Week in New York, and I got home super late. (I have some video on my Instagram, if you’re interested!) There was just no time to go through all the photos. Tomorrow or Sunday, I hope.

In the meantime, I had the chance yesterday before the show to go into Bloomingdales in SoHo and try on some more red lipsticks I’ve read about recently. I am on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick, and I will leave no stone unturned!

First up is the legendary Cherry Lush by Tom Ford. This color has cult status, and is purported to be the perfect red. Of course I had to try it on!

P1000041I look so unhappy. I’m not, I promise!

Amuse bouche

Sorry for the super short entry today. I’m currently away on an overnight trip to Shelter Island with my friend Rose (with no WiFi in our room!).

Rose was kind enough to bring her Bioderma Crealine H2O for me to try, and now I’m officially obsessed. (Do you think she’ll notice if I steal it??) I’m going to have to go back to France and get some myself!

Tomorrow I should have a recap of our trip with many more photos like this:

See you back here tomorrow!
