The subject: MAC Lipmix in Orange

The previous installment of the Battle of the Liquid Lipsticks saw me reviewing Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar. It’s being pitted against Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream and today’s entrant, MAC Lipmix.

I’ve been slightly obsessed with orange lipstick since September of last year when I bought Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Orange. Then I bought YSL Rouge Volupté Perle in Incandescent Orange. It’s a slippery slope. This summer I purchased MAC Lipstick in So Chaud. But then it happened.

Rose and I were sitting outside in the cold watching the Metropolitan Opera opening night telecast, looking up on her phone which celebrities were nice and cozy inside (and what they were wearing!), when we saw this.

Coincidentally, that very same day I checked one of my favorite sites, The Beauty Department, and saw this orange lip look. And I had to have the MAC Lipmix featured, thinking it would look a bit like Coco’s lips.

I went into the MAC Pro shop so that I could try it on before purchasing (I do that SOMETIMES). The makeup artist seemed surprised I would ask for it. She told me that it’s very matte, and asked if I was looking for a very matte finish. I explained that I had seen a look with it, and they had chosen that product because it was a true orange.

She tried it on me, added a pencil, I looked in the mirror, and guess what? I got both. Of course.

I thought that if I added the YSL Incandescent Orange over it for just the hint of shimmer, it might look exactly like Coco’s. But for the sake of the photos, I’m wearing just the Lipmix.

DSC_0968So what do you think?

The verdict: It’s love, it is. Well, when I wear the YSL over it. I wore it out on Sunday night to Ashley’s Nerd Cabaret at the Way Station (BEST BAR IN THE WORLD) and when I came home half a day later, it was still on and perfect. I wore it again on Monday without the YSL for coffee with Ashley, and by the time we left, I had that crusty stuff where my lips meet. However, I intend on trying the OCC Clear Lip Tar with it and seeing how that works. I’m no Coco Rocha, but I felt pretty glamorous!

Are you a fan of orange lipstick? Do you hate it? Let me know!

  1. Really like orange lipstick but it takes a lot of effort to find the right shade for your skin tone especially with the bright ones. Semi-sheer or with a touch of nude/brown they are easier for me to pull of. Would not mind to find a perfect bright though especially for summer.

    • In that way, I guess it's like finding the right red. 🙂 The YSL one is sheer, but also no longer available. The Bobbi Brown one is more muted, and IS available. Also, MAC has several different shades in the family, so one should be able to find the right one.

I worked my way up to the bright, primary orange, but I love it. I also had no idea it would suit me so well! It's worth the strange looks I get wearing it. 😉

  2. It looks great on you! The closest I've gotten to orange has been in the form of some coral or nude colored lipsticks, or else pink with hints of orange.

    • Oh, I have plenty of coral lipsticks, too. (Too, too many.) But I saw some photos and decided to take the plunge. I was so surprised at how good it looked. (Actually, when I went into MAC to try on So Chaud [and Morange], I was with the 2 people I went to Paris with, and when I asked them, they were like, "ORANGE lipstick?! *both made disgusted faces* I think you have colors that look better." Pfft.) So I say you should try new things and just go for it!
