On my continuing quest to find the perfect red,* I decided it was high time I hit the Illamasqua counter. They have an amazing array of colors in their lipstick line, and I had read about Maneater and Sangers, in particular.

(*I’m starting to think there’s no such thing, but more on that a different time.)

Color me surprised that I wound up walking out with a shade I hadn’t even heard of. Box, described as a deep, scarlet red, was actually created by Illamasqua’s creative director, Alex Box, as her signature red lipstick. So it looked like I was in good company!

To the video tape! I mean photos…

Oooh look it's hipster me

Perhaps made less hipstery by the fact that I designed and knit it myself?

Illamasqua lipsticks go for $26 a pop, so that is on the higher side. (It’s too bad; they have a ton of colors I would love to try.) (Not that $26 seems expensive when you compare it with $75…) (I just realized that they’re $24 at Sephora. What gives?!)

This being a matte lipstick, it was dry, but not Ruby Woo dry. It tugs a tiny bit going on, but it spreads really nicely and wears really nicely. It feels very velvety on. And also, being matte, it lasts and lasts. (So if you reapply less, it lasts longer, so does that even out with the money? Hmm…)

It’s not totally dissimilar to Russian Red, which is a touch darker. But this is a more vibrant, yet dark, every day shade. (Well, if you’re like me and you wear red lipstick for every day. 😉 )

One more photo for the road…

I don't know what to do with my...anything
I don’t know what to do with my…anything. Even focusing, apparently.

(Yep, the Phillip Lim sweatshirt is alive and kicking!)

As I mentioned, I would really love to try more of the Illamasqua lipsticks (actually, the whole line seems right up my alley), so I would definitely recommend, at least, the Illamasqua matte lipsticks. Since I haven’t tried any of the other formulas, I can’t vouch for them. But I do find myself reaching a lot for Box when I’m looking for a red. (I don’t know why I’m never just satisfied with my MAC lipsticks!)

What do you think of the color? Have you tried any of the Illamasqua lipsticks? Or any other of their products? What are your perfect reds?

  1. Nice red but I personally would like it better with a tiny bit of sheen if that makes sense.

And the most fashion forward hipster hats are always the ones we knit ourselves! 🙂

PS: when do we get follow up post to your pourpre poll? Curious minds want to know.

    • I understand what you mean. I do tend to favor flat mattes for these kinds of colors. And ha, I know. I also designed this one, so it's even better/worse. 😉

Ha, in the afternoon, never you fear!

I want to hear more about this!

Shani, you just happen to look great in many shades of red lipstick. Lucky you!

I would like to get another red lipstick. My only real red right now is a mini-sized Bite Pomegranate, and I like it, but I would like something that has more blue tones in it.

  3. My all time favorite red lipstick has to be Tarte's Glamazon Pure Performance 12 Hour Lipstick (I wish that they would just call them Amazonian Clay like the rest of their line!) in Fierce. It's not too cool for my skin tone, but it's not so warm that it comes across looking orange.
But this one… calls my name, just like every other red lipstick! Maybe since I haven't bought a red lipstick in a long time…

    • I'll have to add that to my list to check out! I have just picked up another red, so my collection is definitely growing. 🙂

  4. I really love the look of this lipstick. I'm using Kate Moss Rimmel London red lipstick at the moment which is good. I have quite the dislike for Illamasqua after buying the foundation and hating it but the lipstick is tempting! GOSH do a decent red lipstick but doesn't last all day though. The colour suits you very well 🙂

    • I am really loving the Illamasqua matte lipsticks. I may have just bought my second. *whoops* I've heard really good things about the Kate Moss Rimmel lipsticks! I think we have the red here; I had to send a friend on a mission to find 107 for me when she was in London last week. 🙂 I don't think we have GOSH, but I'll have to keep an eye out for it the next time I'm in the UK! x
