I was turned on to Haus of Gloi by Rebecca of HelloPrettyBird when she reviewed their products, and had to immediately go out and buy some of my own to try. I am a sucker for products that smell liked baked goods. Or flowers. Or fruits. Okay, fine, good-smelling products are my weakness all around.
Haus of Gloi is a two-person owned company producing vegan bath and body products and perfume oils. Basically, if you use their stuff, you wind up wanting to eat pastries all the time, but in a good way.
I had a really hard time choosing from all the amazing sounding scents, but wound up with 2 mini jars of Pumpkin Butter in Fancy Bread and Vice. I picked the minis because they were reasonably priced and helped me feel like I wasn’t violating my budget (I really was, though). Because I’m addicted to lip balms, I threw in a lip balm in Hot Toddy (the other scent I wanted of that was already sold out, wah wah). And they threw in a perfume oil sample in Satyr.
Pumpkin Butter in Fancy Bread 2-oz jar for $5
Fancy Bread is part of their limited edition “Yule” collection, and this one is sadly already sold out. The description of the scent is, “Ripe banana, roasted nuts and brown sugar folded into a delicious quick bread.” Basically, you use this and smell like banana bread. Really.
The pumpkin butter is supposed to be their body butter with a thicker consistency, though to me, it still doesn’t feel as thick as most things I use. Also, since I tend to mostly use these things on my hands, I’m used to thicker products. But for the smell of it, I don’t mind reapplying. 😀
Here’s a closer look at the consistency.
Pumpkin Butter in Vice 2-oz jar for $4.50 (6-oz jar for $10)
Vice is truly, truly special. If the Fancy Bread smells like a specific pastry, Vice smells like the bakery of your fantasies, hidden away in a dead-end street of an exotic city. Or, as they describe it, “Steam billows rolling off a vessel of fresh made Turkish coffee, marshmallow goo tainted by graham cracker crumbs, toasted hazelnuts and blanketed in black chocolate.”
However you want to describe it, the smell is intoxicating. I really want to try some of the hair oil in this scent. Its’ dark and mysterious, but also sweet and delicious. That sounds like a pretty good thing to smell like. 🙂
Lip Balm in Hot Toddy 0.2-oz tube for $3.50
This one, too, is sadly sold out already. The description was, “Buttered rum and nutmeg,” and, really, how could you NOT want to slather your lips in that?! (I also wanted Brown Sugar and Pear, but I was out of luck on that one.)
I’ve read that they reformulated their lip balms, and I have no complaints. It does exactly what a lip balm should. It’s not reinventing the wheel. They feel nice and soft and moisturized. Although I do sometimes want to chew my lips off because they smell so good!
Perfume Oil in Satyr sample vial free with purchase (also available to buy for $2.50 and a 5-mL bottle for $12)
The scent description for this is, “Absolutely fiendish creature! And quite frolicsome: Italian blood orange drizzled with blackened vanilla.” Which, in theory, should smell great. I first dabbed some on the thank you note it came attached to, and it smelled lovely. Then I put some on my wrists, and not so much. I think this would be a great scent for your house, but not for my body. But it was free, so I won’t complain!
A cool thing to note: They custom blend perfume oils, so if you’re interested in having your own personal scent made, go for it!
Overall, I really love these products. I only wish they would formulate a thicker hand cream. But I definitely want to go back and try some more flavors. It’s always fun tempting people on the subway with pastry smells they can’t have. 😉
