The Search for the Perfect Red: YSL Rouge Rock lipstick

It may be a new year, but this is not a new pursuit. I’ve felt it my sworn duty to seek out all the best red lipsticks to try and find the elusive “perfect” red. This is clearly a selfless pursuit. Clearly. I’m just doing it for all of you.

I recently sold a lot of my knitting yarn, and decided that I was going to use a little bit of it to try a new one. I couldn’t resist after seeing it on Le Simone Blog (here and here). So, welcome to my menagerie, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture The Mats in Rouge Rock (#203). (Say THAT 10 times fast!)

Rouge Pur Couture lipsticks are a pretty luxe experience, starting with the gold packaging and ending with the “rich” perfume-y scent of the lipsticks. The company describes The Mats line as, “The must have for the perfect matte lip look. Rich, creamy formula is infused with a velvet complex for a luxuriously smooth application, and jojoba oil for long lasting comfort. Intense color pigments for a vibrant touch of color that lasts.”

This is definitely a red for Dagmar, who said about the Illamasqua Box that she prefers something with a bit more sheen. Though described as a matte, it goes on silky, but not as slippery as YSL lipsticks usually are. It wears less like a matte and more like a cream, just with less shine.

Err…if you recognize the necklace, it was something else I did with my yarn money. Details to come!

YSL Rouge Rock lipstick is a bit more long wearing than cream lipsticks, but not as long wearing as a true matte like Box. It was still on after eating, but I did feel the need to reapply, unlike Box, which I could have touched up or not and still gotten away with it. And it wasn’t drying; my lips felt hydrated.

I’m very curious to compare it with the By Terry Rouge Terrybly in 201 Terrific Rouge that I tried on, both color-wise and finish-wise. I think it’s warmer, to the By Terry’s bluer, but I can’t quite tell. I guess I have my next victim! 😉

I’m definitely smitten, though. This is a great choice for a classic, gorgeous red when you don’t want something matte. It’s brighter than Box, and I felt super glamorous wearing it, even with the rest of my makeup kept to a minimum.

What do you think of the color? Have you tried this formula? Gotten any good lipsticks lately? What’s your perfect red?
