In this week’s Wishlist Wednesday, the item is not so much coveted yet unaffordable as it is coveted and somewhat frightening and baffling.

One of the banes of my existence is my chipmunk face. My cheeks go out and get rounder heading towards my jaw, making my cheekbones disappear. (I guess that at least I know I could fend off starving by storing acorns in there.)

I keep reading about contouring products that are supposed to help people like me carve out some cheekbones. Chief among them is Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder in Medium. (So I guess technically this week I’m wishing for cheekbones?)

Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder in Medium
Yes…but how do you use it?!?!

This product has cult status like almost no other (read the reviews). This is the description on the web site:

Takes cheekbones to new heights, enhances contours and highlights natural features.

• A unique powder that adds a subtle shadow to wherever it’s applied
• Use the contour or sculpting brush to lightly dust along the hollows of the cheek, under the chin and neck or under the tip of the nose

• Stronger cheekbones or a slimmed face are a brush away
• Unique combination of brown, red and grey pigments create the perfect shadow for all skin types
• Sheer formula glides on effortlessly

Which is all great in theory, but a) it only comes in one shade (“medium”) and I worry it will be too dark for my deathly skin and b) how the freak do you use it and, well, not look like a freak?

Seeking answers to these questions, I made a wondrous discovery. I found this blog post. I had actually discovered Shameless Fripperies a few weeks earlier, and have blog-fallen for the amazing and beautiful Karima McKimmie.

But beyond my blog/girl crush, I watched her video and, basically, anything I ever wanted to know about contouring was answered in clear and informed detail. I feel like I could actually do it now.

And even better, thanks to her, I found a much, much cheaper alternative to the Kevyn Aucoin that might work for my complexion, NYX Taupe Blush.

Of course, being me, I still want the expensive one. But we’ll start small and aim big, eh? 😉

Have you tried The Sculpting Powder? Do you contour? What’s your favorite product? What are you wishing for this week?

    • I have cool undertones, so the taupe ones sound ideal for my skintone. I've been using my (non-shimmery) bronzer in lieu of a real contour product, but I think I'm ready to step up my game! 🙂

  1. Have you ever tried a nyx blush called taupe. Apparently it's really great for contouring with cooler skin tones.
