I just saw Blue Is the Warmest Color yesterday, and this song stuck in my head from Adèle’s birthday party, so it’s what’s on my mind today.
What are you listening to today?
And have you seen the movie? I have some thoughts after the cut for spoilers.
I know that she’s getting raves, yet I still feel Léa Seydoux’s performance is undervalued. It’s definitely been overshadowed by Adèle Exarchopoulos. But I was amazed that someone that pretty and feminine could transform herself so well and really appear masculine, not just in appearance, but in her physicality, her movements. She moved like a guy. I was not surprised to read that she took classes and studied films with Marlon Brando and James Dean.
I think the title is very interesting, because normally the English translations of French titles are less poetic, not more. The French title is La vie d’Adèle – Chapitres 1 et 2, which translates to “The Life of Adèle – Chapters 1 and 2.” (And does that mean that more chapters are planned? The ending seemed like something more was going to happen, just not yet.) The French title mirrors the book they were studying at the beginning, whereas the English title places the focus on Emma, rather than the protagonist, Adèle.
I kept wondering what the point was of Adèle constantly fiddling with her hair, if it was supposed to denote how she was uncomfortable in her own skin, but it seems that the shooting was very naturalistic, they just let her do whatever and even filmed her in her day-to-day life. So I guess it meant nothing.
My mother pointed out (yes, I saw it with my mother—we have a very healthy relationship, when it comes to things like this, at least) that she always had such a blah expression on her face. I wanted to defend her in the dancing scenes, when she was clearly trying to put distance between herself and others and show she was off limits. I’ve done the same while out, so as not to give the wrong idea. But a lot of the time her face really was “blah.” When she wasn’t crying…
