Music Monday #31- “Tristan” by Patrick Wolf

Affilier

I was creating a playlist on my mp3 player the other day, when I realized that “Tristan” by Patrick Wolf was somehow missing from my mp3 player. This is probably my favorite of his songs, off his Wind in the Wires album. Anyway, I quickly rectified this travesty, and then wound up listening to the song on repeat for a few days once I got home.

“Sorrow by name and sorrow by nature, working for joy on overtime” always strikes a chord with me. But it’s also such a powerful, and LOOK AT ME, I’M HERE kind of song. I adore it.

Shani Asks You Sundays – Foreign Customs

Oh, hello. Back at home and missing France already. Walking around New York, it’s all I can do not to say, “Pardon!” when I bump into someone. But that’s not what I find myself missing most.

What are the favorite foreign customs you’ve observed and/or picked up while traveling?

For me, it’s walking into a store, finding the person in there, and saying, “Bonjour.” Not to mention the, “Merci! Au revoir!” on the way out. I know that French people have a reputation for being rude, but I find that so polite and human, if not friendly. In America, sales assistants will come up and ask you if you need help, but no one gives a fig if you walk out without saying a word. I really miss it when I get back home.

Wishlist Wednesday #31 – New Spring Scent

*This entry has been prescheduled to post while I am out of the country, so if you comment and I don’t reply right away, that’s why.*

Oh, spring. First it seems like you’ll never come, now you’re here like gangbusters. And you’re making me want a new spring scent! In my fragrance forays, I wound up purchasing a sample of Chanel’s Bel Respiro, one of Les Exclusifs de Chanel, exclusive fragrances sold only in Chanel stores. I’ve been wearing that sample to death lately, and my fragrance recognition has developed enough that the first time I put it on, I thought, “Hmm. Green floral.” (It is.)

This week’s question again comes from my friend Andrea, and seems fitting since I am currently traveling.

What was your best or most memorable shopping experience while traveling?

There are SO many to pick from, for me! But last year around this time when I was in Spain, I scored my Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain in Garçonne for about €23 at a random tax-free store on the street in Malaga!! (It retails for $49.50 at home.) 😀

Wishlist Wednesday #30 – Breton Stripe Dress

*This entry has been prescheduled to post while I am out of the country, so if you comment and I don’t reply right away, that’s why.*

I’m just a bit obsessed with stripes. I’m not sure that you knew that about me. Just in case you’re not familiar…

DSC_1653 With flash 20131001_160514_1-2 I have one or two Marinière, or Breton stripe, shirts (like so [Petit Bateau is classic, obvi], but lately I have been hankering for a Breton stripe dress.

(The history of the Marinière is really interesting, if you’re a nerd like me. It was originally the uniform of the French navy [hence the “Marinière”], who hailed from Brittany [hence the “Breton stripe”. If you want to read more, I loved this article.)

Music Monday #30 – “Comme des Enfants” by Coeur de Pirate

*This entry has been prescheduled to post while I am out of the country, so if you comment and I don’t reply right away, that’s why.*

In preparation for my trip, I’ve been listening to a lot of French music. To try and absorb as much of the language as I can!

One of the first French-speaking singers I was introduced to, and still one of my favorites, is Cœur de Pirate, the stage name of Béatrice Martin. She has had shows in my area twice, and I have not been able to attend either. It makes me sad, because I really love her voice. Even when I don’t understand what she’s singing, I enjoy listening to her sing it.

Shani Asks You Sundays – Expiration Dates

I’m getting on a plane tonight and heading for one of my favorite cosmetics-buying countries for two weeks, and it’s left me thinking about the other products I have at home. I read recently about people who threw out makeup because they were past their expiration date, and I thought to myself, “They put expiration dates on makeup?!”

Maybe it’s something I should be more aware of, but I want to know what you think.

Do you pay attention to makeup expiration dates? Do you throw products out after they’ve “expired,” or do you keep them anyway?

Personally, the only makeup I really replace regularly is mascara. I don’t get a new one every 3 months, as they advise, but I do change that up most often. I have bags of old makeup that I don’t use (and have been looking for a place to donate to, but more on that a different time), but I find myself periodically digging into the bags and pulling out old products I haven’t used in ages and am suddenly in need of again.

I personally feel that things like powder eyeshadows and blushes don’t go bad. Lipsticks are obvious when they’re past their prime—they’re not supposed to smell and feel like crayons!—but most everything else? Nah.

Anyway, bon voyage, lovely readers! I have posts scheduled for when I’m gone, but I’m not sure how often I’ll get to reply to comments. But please leave them anyway! 😉

Wishlist Wednesday #29 – Alexandra Grecco tulle skirt

What could be better than a trip to Paris? Dressing like one of Dégas’s ballerinas in Paris! Keiko Lynn posted this photo on Instagram from her Paris jaunt, and I was immediately in love…with her skirt.

Music Monday #29 – “Answering Machine” by Matt Nathanson

Affilier

You may or may not know who Matt Nathanson is, but you’re a lot more likely to now than you were when I first fell in love with him and his music. He comes to mind now, because one of my favorites of his albums is called Still Waiting for Spring. It’s JUST starting to warm up a bit here in NY, but this winter has left me so chilled to the bone, I still haven’t warmed up myself.

But Matt and his music and his humor always warm my heart, so naturally I would need to share a live recording of one of his songs, because his live shows are half concert/half stand-up. And this is an old, old favorite. I hope you love it, too.

Shani Asks You Sundays – Travel Beauty

I am clearly already suffering from vacation brain (sorry to the people at work!), so today’s question is all about going away.

How do you choose which beauty products to bring with you? Do you pare down? Or do you wind up with too much?

Personally, I always wind up with way too much. I mean, WAY too much. It’s usually because I’m overwhelmed and can’t make decisions as to, “You will only be able to wear these 10 things,”  because I never know what I’ll be in the mood for, even when I try and plan around outfits.

This time, I have a new travel cosmetics case and, ideally, I’d like to only take what fits in there. Ideally. (Normally I wind up with 3 or 4 packed to the brim smaller cases. So, wish me luck!!)
