The Search for the Perfect Red: By Terry Rouge Terrybly in Terrific Rouge

Affilier Acheté

Ever since I first tried it on in October, I’ve been dreaming of By Terry Rouge Terrybly in Terrific Rouge. (Say THAT ten times fast.) Terrible name aside, at $49 a pop, By Terry Rouge Terrybly lipsticks are an investment, even when you are employed. So it took me a while to work my way round to getting this.

And, guys? I’m in trouble. I want this formula in every color now. And I’m saying this about a lipstick, a RED lipstick, that’s not matte!

Music Monday #18 – “I Follow Rivers” by Lykke Li

I just saw Blue Is the Warmest Color yesterday, and this song stuck in my head from Adèle’s birthday party, so it’s what’s on my mind today.

What are you listening to today?

And have you seen the movie? I have some thoughts after the cut for spoilers.

January 2014 Birchbox Unboxing

Affilier Acheté

New month, new January 2014 Birchbox. I finally got mine, days later than some. My post office is literally the worst.

(In case you’re not familiar with it, Birchbox is a monthly subscription service where, for just $10 a month, you receive a box full of deluxe-sized and travel-sized samples. You receive Birchbox points for every purchase you make and every review your write, which can be redeemed in their store. Get your own here.)

So, I followed through on my threat to stop making videos. (Actually, if I’m honest, that was decided by my oversleeping by an hour yesterday morning.) I’m sure you’re devastated not to watch my hack productions. (This will give me more time to hone my craft for next month?)

If you’ve read my previous unboxing posts and/or watched my videos, you know that I’ve been finding Birchbox disappointing for a while. Every month I’m THISCLOSE to canceling, and just never pull the trigger. I am not an optimist, but I guess I just WANT it to get better since I love getting my Birchbox (in theory).

Well, this month’s has not gone far to staying my hands. Especially considering one of the main things was tea. (Fine, it was a “lifestyle extra,” but still!) I got a couple of things that were, hmm, okay, cool. But only one thing that I’m like, “Yayyyyyy!!” about. Maybe my expectations are too high?

Anyway, on to the rundown!

Celebrity Fashion Lust #10 – Léa Seydoux in Miu Miu

Like everyone else, I’ve fallen for Léa Seydoux. Now that she’s collaborating with Miu Miu, I’m even more smitten.

Les Cinq Petites Choses #4

Affilier Acheté

I decided that instead of talking about all the things that I want, I would talk about the things that I have or that I don’t have but am just appreciating.

Alors, voici, les cinq petites choses que je suis amoureuse en ce moment (is that right?). The 5 little things I’m loving right now.

#1 – You’ll notice that I threw in some French again, and that’s heavily influenced by two of the things on the list today.

I was talking to my friend Darren in Montreal, and he recommended some music artists to me who sing in French. (As we know, I like them.) I promptly went and looked them up, and super glad I did. I’m pretty crap discussing music (despite how much I love listening to it), so I’ll paraphrase Darren.

Alex Nevsky – Himalaya Mon Amour He’s kind of chamber pop/rock with some 60s influences. Apparently, “On leur a fait croire” became an actual radio hit up there, despite the fact that though it sounds so fun, the lyrics are terribly sarcastic and dark.

Le Couleur – Voyage Love EP (Yes, “Le,” not “La,” the error is apparently intentional.) It has a very disco synth sound, but it’s undeniably modern. I even like it despite the synth. 😉 “Vacances de 87” and “Voyage amoureux” are great to dance to.

Peter Peter – Une version améliorée de la tristesse He’s apparently the indie darling up in Montreal. He used to make more folk rock music, but discovered the synthesizer for this album, so it’s kind of experimental synth pop. And good.

(Okay, so technically this was 3 things. A bonus. 😉 )

Music Monday #14 – La Nuit Américaine by Lescop

Yes, I’m STILL listening to Lescop’s self-titled album, despite the fact that it’s now winter. (It felt very autumn-y to me.)

Lescop, the brainchild of Mathieu Peudupin (who was born the same year as me, finally, not a child!), do moody, atmospheric, French music like no one else. They released an EP in 2011 and then their full-length album in 2012.

La Forêt is the song that I listened to the most all autumn, but lately, it’s been this one on heavy rotation. (And it’s not narcissistic, I promise.)

(The only video I found was the long version, but it’s worth it!)

What do you think? What have you been listening to lately? Do your favorite songs on an album switch up?

Purple heart

Well, guys. I was finally able to take some photos and test out the object of my affections, Serge Lutens lipstick in Pourpre Maure.

My dedication to the cause went to extreme lengths that day. I woke up earlier than usual (and my new commute is a killer anyway) and brought my camera out back, making sure the door wasn’t locked. I wasn’t wearing a coat, and it was about 27ºF. I finished taking the photos…and, yup, the door was indeed locked.

Ten minutes later and shivering my ass off, I got someone to let me in. So you’d better really like these photos!

I just need to say, I think I’m in trouble. Like, serious trouble. I truly and deeply heart it.

To start with, here is my own photo of the sampler:

DSC_1502 The top three…swoon.

The three dark colors are all “me” colors. The bottom 3, not so much. (I am pale and I look dead in light, nude-y colors.) Although I think that Or Frele ( the one on the bottom left) is probably meant to be layered over another color, since it’s essentially clear with gold sparkles.

To be completely honest, when I went into Barneys to try on my color, the guy at the counter told me it was #2 (which is actually the top middle color). Even though I had requested the color by name to try on. (He also made me try on #10 Garde Rose, which is gorgeous as well. Of course.)

So part of me was wondering if perhaps I was now dreaming about the wrong color. Nope. He got it wrong. (I know for sure because I wore Roman Rouge yesterday…and halfway through the day switched back over to Pourpre Maure. :p Even though it’s a beautiful color on its own…it’s not MY color.)

I’ve already hit the bottom of the cardboard in one area of the sample, so I’m reluctant to use it for extraneous things, like swatching, so I’ll link you to someone who already did. I am curious to compare it to MAC Rebel, though (which I do own as well), especially since Lisa Eldridge mentioned it as an alternative. And, you know, it’s $75.

DSC_1504 Apparently I’m unable to apply lipstick straight with a lip brush from a cardboard sampler. Or I put it on in the dark? I also realized later I completely forgot to put on blush. Fail.

DSC_1506 My friends call this “Shani face.” It’s just cause I feel dumb in pictures.

DSC_1511

DSC_1514 It’s crooked, but it’s so pretty!

Now, you’re wondering, sure, it’s got a gorgeous face, but does it have anything going on upstairs?

Well, it’s not a member of Mensa, but it probably graduated with distinction. 😉

It goes on feeling very creamy, and then dries down to a satiny, velvet finish. You really don’t feel it on, but it’s not drying. It’s not hydrating, either, though. You should make sure your lips are exfoliated and hydrated before applying.

One of the things these lipsticks are known for are their intense pigmentation. And it did last through a meal, and didn’t transfer onto my spoon at all. I did have to reapply it in the afternoon.

The only negative thing (besides for the price!) is that when it fades, it tends to stain your lips the way wine does, catching on the most prominent areas. But while you’re wearing it, it’s glorious.

What do you think of the color? Have you ever had any mishaps in the course of performing your blogging duties? Do you want to see what the other colors look like? How do you get over something once it’s taken hold of your soul? 😉

December 2013 Birchbox Unboxing

(In case you’re not familiar with it, Birchbox is a monthly subscription service where, for just $10 a month, you receive a box full of deluxe-sized and travel-sized samples. You receive Birchbox points for every purchase you make and every review your write, which can be redeemed in their store. It’s pretty much a cycle of awesome! Get your own here.)

I followed last month’s lead and again avoided all spoilers so that I would not be envious or upset about what I did or did not get. It’s been only mildly successful, because, while I now no longer am upset that I didn’t get something specific, I’ve been underwhelmed by what I did get. (And I had a slight spoiler by texting with Rose who let slip the nature of one of her items, and I wound up figuring it out. And being sad I didn’t get it.)

So, on to this month. I feel like I am nearing 2 decisions:

1. Cancel my Birchbox See, I LOVE getting a little box of goodies in the mail every month, but I’ve really been underwhelmed the past few months. Since I resubscribed back in July in order to get the Davines shampoo and conditioner samples, I’ve really only been thrilled about 3 products: Davines This Is A Sea Salt Spray, the Tocca hand cream, and the Stila Stay All Day in Beso. That’s 3 things in 6 months, and one of them came in a replacement box. It may just not be worth it anymore, or maybe I should try a different service.

2. Quit making videos
I know, I know, learning curve. But this is my 4th video and I’ve done yet another thing wrong. (I forgot that you can’t see what’s in my hands and I didn’t hold everything up for the camera.) I mean, at this point, I may have learned to a. shoot it with my point-and-shoot so that it focuses in on close-ups, b. how to add music, and c. how to add an intro, but my video skills are still severely lacking, it may just look worse for me to keep making them than it would for me to stop them. I mean, come on, admit it—you watch other unboxing videos and they’re way better.

Anyway, the review!

As always, If you have any questions about any of the products mentioned or anything else, please let me know. I’ve listed links to the products on Birchbox in the video information, so you should watch it on YouTube to access that. If you have any suggestions for future videos, let me know!

What did you get in your box? Have you tried any other services? (Beauty Bar? Glossybox?) Do you recommend them?

Not your 90's flannel

Not your 90’s flannel by shedreamsinperfectfrench featuring snap shirts
I’m sure it’s the weather, but when I woke up yesterday morning and saw that it was snowing, all I wanted in the world to wear was a nice, warm, brightly colored flannel shirt.

I had plenty of them back when I was a teenager in the 90s (yes, I just dated myself :p). They were oversized, unflattering, and super, super cozy. Luckily, none of them have made the leap to my adult wardrobe.

But I really wished they had. Which got me wishing desperately for one of the more contemporary, fitted versions. I’m adoring the top middle one for the colors, but also the bottom right two, especially because they’re on sale for $20 at Hollister.

And yet, I hesitate. Only because I’m attempting to save money. My guiding principle these days is, “But do I really NEED it?” Obviously there are the impulse buys, but for some reason, purchasing clothing seems more unnecessary. (And not the millionth lipstick. Go figure.) But I realllllllly want one. So it’s wishlisted.

I also REALLY wish I had bought this scarf while I had the chance.
It was only $30 on Zara, but again, it wasn’t something I NEEDED. I had bookmarked it and kept going back to look at it, and now it’s sold out and selling for ridiculous amounts on eBay. I know that I knit and don’t need to buy scarves, but every time I see someone wearing it, I just kick myself all over again.

Maybe all this means is that I miss Scotland? 😉

Do you like flannel shirts in every day wear? Which would you pick? Do you think I should buy the scarf on eBay? What are you lusting after this week?
