Music Monday #35 – “Fading Like a Flower” by Roxette

Happy New Year, everyone! I should have some new content for you by the end of the week, but in the meantime, I thought I’d share this oldie but goodie, since it’s been on rotation a lot for me in the last few days. (IT MAKES ME FEEL SO OLD TO CALL THIS AN ‘OLDIE,’ but how many of you actually know who Roxette is/was?!)

Anyone have any resolutions? 🙂

Music Monday #34 – “My Silver Lining” by First Aid Kit

One of my favorite bands, First Aid Kit, has just released the video for the first single from their new album. The song is called “My Silver Lining,” and it hasn’t quite grabbed me yet. It’s not bad; not at all. It just hasn’t grown on me yet. But they’re playing here on my birthday, so hopefully hearing it live will help!

What do you think?

Music Monday #33 – “Gigantic” by The Pixies

Since 2005, every time I hear “Gigantic” by The Pixies, I’m transported back to Leeds Festival. I have so many strong associations with it.

Now, thanks to Apple and their commercials, I’m reminded of it all the time.

Happy Monday!

Music Monday #32 – “You Fucking Love It” by Dirty Pretty Things

Affilier

When the news came out that there was going to be another Libertines reunion that I was going to be missing, it got me going back and listening to all Libertines-related music. A personal favorite of mine was Carl Barat‘s next band, Dirty Pretty Things.

I know, I know. They will go down in the annals of history as a mediocre indie rock band. They were not nearly as good as The Libertines. But you know what? I don’t care. I love some of the music that sprang from this band, especially the songs off of their first album, Waterloo to Anywhere.

So here’s a raucous number off of that album for your Monday morning!

Music Monday #31- “Tristan” by Patrick Wolf

Affilier

I was creating a playlist on my mp3 player the other day, when I realized that “Tristan” by Patrick Wolf was somehow missing from my mp3 player. This is probably my favorite of his songs, off his Wind in the Wires album. Anyway, I quickly rectified this travesty, and then wound up listening to the song on repeat for a few days once I got home.

“Sorrow by name and sorrow by nature, working for joy on overtime” always strikes a chord with me. But it’s also such a powerful, and LOOK AT ME, I’M HERE kind of song. I adore it.

Music Monday #31 – “Chandelier” by Sia

*This entry has been prescheduled to post while I am out of the country, so if you comment and I don’t reply right away, that’s why.*

Sia is one of those artists that I don’t really listen to under normal circumstances, but then discover specific songs of hers that I love. (Yes. “Breath Me” and “Titanium“. You know what I’m saying.)

I probably won’t buy her album, but I am kind of really digging her new song.

Music Monday #30 – “Comme des Enfants” by Coeur de Pirate

*This entry has been prescheduled to post while I am out of the country, so if you comment and I don’t reply right away, that’s why.*

In preparation for my trip, I’ve been listening to a lot of French music. To try and absorb as much of the language as I can!

One of the first French-speaking singers I was introduced to, and still one of my favorites, is Cœur de Pirate, the stage name of Béatrice Martin. She has had shows in my area twice, and I have not been able to attend either. It makes me sad, because I really love her voice. Even when I don’t understand what she’s singing, I enjoy listening to her sing it.

Music Monday #29 – “Answering Machine” by Matt Nathanson

You may or may not know who Matt Nathanson is, but you’re a lot more likely to now than you were when I first fell in love with him and his music. He comes to mind now, because one of my favorites of his albums is called Still Waiting for Spring. It’s JUST starting to warm up a bit here in NY, but this winter has left me so chilled to the bone, I still haven’t warmed up myself.

But Matt and his music and his humor always warm my heart, so naturally I would need to share a live recording of one of his songs, because his live shows are half concert/half stand-up. And this is an old, old favorite. I hope you love it, too.

Music Monday #28 – “Blue Moon” by Beck

Affilier

I’ve never actually been the biggest Beck fan. Is that bad to say? It’s just never super appealed to me. But I heard a song off of his new album, and it struck me, at first, on a musical level, but then on a lyrical level as well. I’m usually someone who won’t like a song unless I can stand the lyrics (almost always…obviously everyone has exceptions), but I hadn’t quite made them out. It really fits how I’ve been feeling lately. Hope you like it, too.

I’m going to have to check out more of the new album, Morning Phase!

Music Monday #27 – “We Are Fine” by Sharon Van Etten

My heart is still bruised and sore from my team’s traumatic loss yesterday to their most bitter rivals, so I thought this song was kind of fitting. Plus, Zach Condon.

How do you cheer yourself up when you’re down?
