The Search for the Perfect Red: Illamasqua Box Matte Lipstick

Affilier Acheté

On my continuing quest to find the perfect red,* I decided it was high time I hit the Illamasqua counter. They have an amazing array of colors in their lipstick line, and I had read about Maneater and Sangers, in particular.

(*I’m starting to think there’s no such thing, but more on that a different time.)

Color me surprised that I wound up walking out with a shade I hadn’t even heard of. Box, described as a deep, scarlet red, was actually created by Illamasqua’s creative director, Alex Box, as her signature red lipstick. So it looked like I was in good company!

To the video tape! I mean photos…

Seasonal party look!

Now! Back to our regularly scheduled programming, kids.

You may have noticed a dearth of posts on this blogs related to the upcoming holiday. No gift idea posts. No dressing idea posts. It’s not because I’m all, “Bah humbug,” but simply because I’m just a Jew, a lonely Jew at Christmas.

Even I, however, get invited to the odd holiday party. In this case, it was my work holiday party.

I am nothing if not festive. (A photo of myself I can actually get behind.)

I absolutely loved the makeup I did that night. Though I absolutely did not get a good photo of it. (WHY AM I SUCH A BAD BLOGGER?!)

But it looked something like this.

You can't even see the makeup. But look at the lipstick. And how it matches the skirt.

You can’t even see the makeup. But look at the lipstick. And how it matches the skirt.

So I’m here to give you a step-by-step to the awesome look that I did that you can’t really see. Because I’m thoughtful like that.

A. Start off with whatever foundation/concealer/powder you prefer.

B. Prime your eyes—you’ll be dancing/drinking/sweating/all of the above, and no one wants smudgy, melty eyeshadow while you’re making eyes at the guy from accounting. (Does anyone actually make eyes at people from accounting?) (Sorry if anyone reading this is in accounting. I’m totally making eyes at you right now.)

C. I used (1) MAC Patina eyeshadow all across the lid and just up to under the brow bone. It’s a gorgeous antique gold/bronze color.

D. Then I used (2) MAC Shale eyeshadow, a velvety plum color, in the crease.

E. Just in the outer corner, I used (3) MAC Beauty Marked Eyeshadow to deepen. It’s a black-red color.

F. Then I patted a little of (4) MAC Pressed Pigment in Flicker into the center of my lid, inspired by this Lisa Eldridge tutorial.

G. Use the black liquid eyeliner of your choice and make a small cat eye (the lips are so dramatic, you don’t need much more). Or, if you want it a little less dramatic, use the (3) Beauty Marked eyeshadow with a wet eyeliner brush to line.

H. I’ve also been using an amazing antique gold shadow liner on my lower waterline, and it just seems to make my eyes glow (as seen here). The one I’m using was limited edition and sold out, but I recently read an article on The Beauty Department where they advised the same thing, and the liner they used was Jouer Creme Eyeshadow Crayon in Baroque. (ETA: As of 12/27/13, Macy’s still has the Smashbox one I used!)

I. Also from Lisa Eldridge, I’ve learned to put my lipstick on first, then gauge how much blush I need. I rarely go without a lip primer these days, especially with a dark lipstick, so I would recommend it. (My favorite is Bite Beauty Line and Define Lip Primer.) I lined my lips with (5) MAC Lip Pencil in Vino, and then I used (6) Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Lipstick in Entourage. But since it’s crazy priced, you could just use a dark, wine lipstick of your choice. (Though I love this formula.)

J. Okay, then it was time to get cheeky, so I didn’t look like the undead. I’ve been using (7) MAC Powder Blush in Dame A LOT lately. It’s the perfect just pinky flush blush color. It works with red lipsticks like a charm, which I wouldn’t have ever thought. (Pink with red?! Trust me, it works.)

K. To finish things up, I used the highlight part of the Sephora Collection MicroSmooth Baked Sculpting Trio in Sweet on my cheekbones and under my browbones.

And that’s it! Now all you have to do is put on a party outfit and get out there!

I'm sparing my coworkers the shame of appearing here.

(Skirt shamelessly stolen from this entry. But I don’t care, I love it.)

What do you think of the look? What’s your favorite holiday party look?
