One of my favorite bands, First Aid Kit, has just released the video for the first single from their new album. The song is called “My Silver Lining,” and it hasn’t quite grabbed me yet. It’s not bad; not at all. It just hasn’t grown on me yet. But they’re playing here on my birthday, so hopefully hearing it live will help!

You may or may not know who Matt Nathanson is, but you’re a lot more likely to now than you were when I first fell in love with him and his music. He comes to mind now, because one of my favorites of his albums is called Still Waiting for Spring. It’s JUST starting to warm up a bit here in NY, but this winter has left me so chilled to the bone, I still haven’t warmed up myself.
But Matt and his music and his humor always warm my heart, so naturally I would need to share a live recording of one of his songs, because his live shows are half concert/half stand-up. And this is an old, old favorite. I hope you love it, too.
There’s nothing like a day off from work to make you relish your freedom!

I sang this song at karaoke on Saturday night, and was reminded what an incredible, amazing, cathartic song it is to sing along to at the top of your lungs.
Happy Monday, everyone.

Brooklyn band Hospitality is new to me, having just read about them in Entertainment Weekly. This is the single from their new album, Trouble.
I’m not sure what I think yet. I think I like it. What do you guys think?
The Naked and Famous may have a new album out, but it’s still Passive Me, Aggressive You that so often comes up on my mp3 player. This one in particular gets stuck in my head all the time.
It’s a good anthem for a Monday.

New month, new January 2014 Birchbox. I finally got mine, days later than some. My post office is literally the worst.
(In case you’re not familiar with it, Birchbox is a monthly subscription service where, for just $10 a month, you receive a box full of deluxe-sized and travel-sized samples. You receive Birchbox points for every purchase you make and every review your write, which can be redeemed in their store. Get your own here.)
So, I followed through on my threat to stop making videos. (Actually, if I’m honest, that was decided by my oversleeping by an hour yesterday morning.) I’m sure you’re devastated not to watch my hack productions. (This will give me more time to hone my craft for next month?)
If you’ve read my previous unboxing posts and/or watched my videos, you know that I’ve been finding Birchbox disappointing for a while. Every month I’m THISCLOSE to canceling, and just never pull the trigger. I am not an optimist, but I guess I just WANT it to get better since I love getting my Birchbox (in theory).
Well, this month’s has not gone far to staying my hands. Especially considering one of the main things was tea. (Fine, it was a “lifestyle extra,” but still!) I got a couple of things that were, hmm, okay, cool. But only one thing that I’m like, “Yayyyyyy!!” about. Maybe my expectations are too high?
Anyway, on to the rundown!
Just the other day I was explaining to someone why I sometimes like the Glee version of songs better than the original. I’m a sucker for harmonies, and the way Glee arranges them really get to me.
Same with today’s song. I know it’s nearly sacrilege to say that you don’t love something that Kate Bush has done, and maybe it’s because I heard this version of the song before hers (yes, I have big gaps in my musical education), but to me this version is not just a cover, it’s a reimagining. It breathes so much life into the song. It makes it unforgettable. (Really, I dare you to get it out of your head.)
So, without further ado, The Futureheads covering “Hounds of Love.”
They’re one of my favorite bands, and one of the most fun bands to see (and travel to see) in concert. It’s been way, way, WAY too long since they were out here, though!
Do you ever like covers better than the originals? What are you listening to today?
Saturday night saw me in a bar populated with NYU students (and I’m far from a college student, let me tell you). When a familiar song, that I hadn’t heard in ages, came on: “More Than A Feeling” by Boston. And amusingly, one that so many of the younguns there wouldn’t even know.
But it seems fitting since I’ll be heading up to Boston on Thursday evening. So let’s take back the 80s!
I dare you not to tap your hands and feet along. 😉

For various and sundry reasons, 2013 was kind of a huge bust. And I know, I know, that means I should so, so be looking forward to letting the door hit it on the way out, but I have been able to muster no enthusiasm for New Years.
Only a small part of the reason is that, once again, I’m single on New Years. And, sure, one could look at it as an excuse to go find someone to kiss at midnight, but, UGH. I’m too old and too over that. (Or maybe I’m just saying all this to have a good excuse to post this song.)
Either way, if I wind up doing something or if I don’t, this is going to be me New Years anthem. (But, if I could be half as awesome as this song and Robyn, I’d be doing quite well for myself.)
After all, “all adventurous women do.”
How was your year? Are you looking forward to New Years? What will your anthem be?
